We built this Bartender in 1985 for an experienced yachtsman for the specific purpose of cruising the Inside Passage to Alaska with his wife. Whether punching into a chop in the rain or gliding along in the sun, this is a very good boat for day boating, overnighting, or extended cruising.

We made some changes from Calkins' design:
We Nexusized the construction, changing it to an all epoxy-glued system. We increased the frame spacing to 20", changed to vertical grain Douglas fir frames, increased the frame siding to 1.5", and changed from bent oak to laminated Douglas fir longitudinals. These changes have made this boat very long lived and in large measure are responsible for its very good condition today.

We raised the cabin top to give the owner and his wife standing headroom and made the cabin slightly longer. This added space made it possible to add an enclosed head with holding tank. We added a decent galley with stove and sink and a tall bow pulpit for safety when anchoring.

Cricket is a terrific buy in a classic, extremely seaworthy, economical small trailerable vessel.

Here are some recent photos of Cricket.

Even though she has an inboard Diesel with shaft and prop, she is configured to be trailerable.

The nice stern of a Bartender double-ender. These hulls were developed for West Coast bar crossings. The planing boards keep the sharp stern from squatting.

She has full cruising electronics. The trim is teak.

Custom foredeck hatch and anchor handling equipment.

The typical high quality Nexus woodwork in the cockpit is well maintained.

A shipshape steering station with Morse controls

The tidy galley features an alcohol stove in a drawer which pulls out for easier access. The enclosed head is opposite the galley.

The Yanmar 4JH-TE is in excellent condition. An Aquadrive joint allows the engine to be mounted level and lower and reduces vibration.
